约翰·西姆于1970年七月10日出生于约克夏的西部利兹，在兰开夏的 Nelson 成长。他先就读于 Nelson 的 Edge End 中学，随后在16岁时进入黑泽艺术大学继续学习，18岁后工作于伦敦的戏剧艺术中心。他和他的妻子凯特玛蔻温还有他们的孩子 Ryan （出生于 2001年8月13日） 和 Molly （出生于2007年2月）一起住。1996年西姆在巴伦西亚电影节上凭其处女作 Boston Kickout 获得最佳男演员奖。
